Optimization of Adaptive Data-Flows for Competing Multimedia Presentational Database Sessions
نویسندگان
چکیده
Database systems which support preorchestrated multimedia presentations must be able to adapt the resource demand of executing presentations. Such adaptations can be dictated by underlying resource management components. When resources are not reserved, such adaptations are necessary to overcome uctuating resource availability. Adaptations across components of presentations as well as across concurrent sessions have to be considered in the context of the individual needs of presentation providers and viewers. This paper describes the general concept of Reactive Playout Management (RPM) which provides an application-independent service for adaptive multimedia presentations. The PYLOT scheme (PlaYout Load OpTimization scheme) is proposed which enables RPM in best-e ort architectures. In particular, the global allocation routine of PYLOT is elaborated. This routine allocates load shares which sessions must give up or may add on according to replugable adjustment strategies. In an optional postoptimization step, the routine manipulates the load proportions such that minimal total adjustment costs and maximal total adjustment pro t are achieved, respectively. This optimization is demonstrated by experimental results.

Today most commercial database management software is extended to store and manage multimedia objects beside standard alphanumeric data. In this paper we study how such universal database systems can be used for implementing an adaptive multimedia digital library. We present a framework for e cient and exible delivery of multimedia content based on the idea that multimedia objects are often sto...

SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) is a signaling protocol standardized by IETF, aiming to manage the multimedia transmission sessions among different parties. This paper illustrates an adaptive multimedia transmission system for wired and wireless networks based on SIP with protocol selection mechanism for a certain level of QoS guarantee. In our system, SIP is not only used for call setup sign...

متن کاملThe Utility Model for Adaptive Multimedia Systems
We present the Utility Model | a mathematicalmodel to incorporatethe dynamics of adaptive multimedia systems (AMSs). It is based on the concepts of quality pro-le, quality-resource mapping, session and system utility, and of system resource constraints. The main problem in a multi-session AMS is to nd an operating quality for each session such that the overall system utility is maximized under ...
